Safe ministry practices

Safeguarding

Every person should be treated with dignity and care. These draft expectations set clear boundaries for the ministry while formal safeguarding procedures are reviewed.

Working draft — leadership approval required

In an emergency: Contact emergency services or a qualified crisis service where you live. This ministry is not equipped to provide emergency response.

1. Currently for adults aged 18+

The ministry is currently intended only for adults aged 18 and above. Enquiries involving a minor should not be placed in an adult group or mentoring relationship. A separate safeguarding framework would be required before any future ministry with minors.

2. Mentor conduct and accountability

Mentors and facilitators are expected to complete appropriate selection and training, follow a written code of conduct, serve within clear role boundaries and remain accountable to a ministry coordinator. Concerns about conduct should be documented and reviewed promptly.

3. Online sessions and recording

Sessions are not recorded by default. Participants and volunteers should not make screenshots, recordings or transcripts without the informed agreement of everyone involved and prior ministry approval. Approved platforms and appropriate private settings should be used.

4. Clear relational boundaries

The following behaviour is prohibited in ministry relationships:

  • Harassment, intimidation, discrimination or spiritual manipulation
  • Romantic or sexual solicitation
  • Requests for money, loans, investments, gifts or business opportunities
  • Promises of healing, employment, immigration help or guaranteed outcomes
  • Pressuring someone to share private information or make a religious commitment
  • Using a participant’s story or image publicly without clear permission

A mentor must never use their ministry role to create dependency or personal advantage.

5. Professional and emergency help

Mentors are not therapists, doctors, lawyers or emergency responders. They can listen and offer spiritual encouragement, but serious mental-health concerns, abuse, threats of harm or medical emergencies require qualified local help. When immediate danger is present, contact local emergency services. Safeguarding concerns should also be escalated through the ministry’s approved reporting process.

6. Confidentiality and its limits

Personal stories should be treated respectfully and shared only when needed for responsible ministry. Confidentiality cannot be promised when there is a serious risk of harm, suspected abuse or a legal reporting obligation. The person should be told about these limits at the start of a mentoring or group relationship.

Report a concern

If you experience or witness harmful conduct connected with the ministry, stop the conversation if needed and email safeguarding@example.org. This is a placeholder address and must be replaced with an approved, monitored reporting contact before launch.
